How the spine width is worked out
A paperback spine is simply the stack of pages seen edge on, so its width is the page count multiplied by the thickness of a single page. Amazon publishes one thickness per paper: white paper is 0.002252 inches per page, cream is 0.0025, standard color is 0.002252 and premium color is 0.002347. This calculator uses exactly those constants, the same ones our Book Studio uses when it sizes a finished cover, so the number here is the number KDP will check your file against.
Count every page of the interior, including the title page, copyright page, blank pages and the answer key. KDP interiors print on both sides of the sheet, so the count is always even. A 101-page PDF is treated as 102.
The 79-page spine text rule
KDP will not print text on a spine under 79 pages. A 78-page book on white paper has a spine of about 0.176 inches, and once you keep 0.0625 inches clear of each fold there is barely a twentieth of an inch left, which no title can survive after trimming tolerances. If your book is close, adding a few puzzle pages is often worth it: a readable spine is what a shopper sees on a shelf or in a stack photo.
Paper choice changes everything downstream
Switching between white and cream changes the spine, which changes the full cover width, which means your cover file has to be rebuilt. Most puzzle books use white paper because grids and shaded answer cells print crisper on it; novels and journals tend to use cream. Decide the paper before you design the cover.

Does trim size change the spine width?
No. Spine width depends only on page count and paper. Trim size changes the height of the spine and the width of the front and back panels, not its thickness.
Why is cream paper thicker than white?
Cream paper is a slightly heavier stock, so each page adds 0.0025 inches instead of 0.002252. The same 200-page book is 0.450 inches thick on white and 0.500 inches on cream, which is why a cover built for one paper will be rejected on the other.
What happens if my spine width is wrong?
KDP compares your cover file to the size it expects from your page count and paper. If the full cover width is off, the upload is rejected with an expected versus submitted size message. Recalculate whenever your page count changes, even by two pages.
