What actually belongs on a back-to-school night table
Five things, and they are the same five in every classroom: a sign-in sheet so you know who came, a transportation form because dismissal is where a misunderstanding costs the most, a volunteer sign-up that includes jobs people can do from home at 9pm, a parent survey so you stop guessing about a child six weeks sooner, and a welcome letter with a tear-off strip that gets you a current email address. Why the communication log has a column for attempts

What is a parent communication log and why keep one?
It is a single sheet where you record every contact with a family: the date, who you spoke to, how, why, and what was agreed. Keep it and you can answer "when did you tell us about this?" with a date. The version here is landscape with fourteen rows, and it deliberately has a column for attempts as well as conversations — an unreturned call is the entry that matters most six months later.
What forms do I need for back-to-school night?
In practice, five: a sign-in sheet, a transportation and dismissal form, a volunteer sign-up, a "tell me about your child" survey, and a welcome letter with your contact details and a tear-off section for a current phone number and email. All five are in this maker, and all five are also in the Meet the Teacher Kit if you would rather have them pre-filled and bound.
Are these really editable, or do I have to write over a PDF?
You fill in your name, room number, grade, school, school year, email and phone once at the top of this page, and every template is rebuilt around them. You can also retitle the document. The blanks that remain on the printed sheet are the ones a parent is meant to write in.
What happens if I leave a detail blank?
The template prints a ruled blank line rather than an empty gap or a stray placeholder. So a letter you have not put a phone number into reads "call the school office at ________", which is a form you can fill in by hand, instead of something that looks broken.
Can I use a behavior chart for parent communication?
That is what the weekly chart here is designed for. Five days across, your own two or three agreed targets down the side, a row for teacher initials and a row for parent initials so both of you can see the sheet made the trip. The behavior note home is the other half — short, specific, and with a box for the days that went well, because a note that only ever appears after a bad day teaches a family to dread it.
