Why 5mm is the standard
Almost every commercial bullet journal — Leuchtturm1917, Rhodia, Scribbles That Matter — uses a 5mm dot grid. If you want your printed pages to sit alongside a bought notebook, or to follow spread layouts from the bullet-journal community without recalculating everything, 5mm is the size to match. It also happens to be a comfortable single line height for most handwriting.
Dot size matters more than you'd think
A dot that's too large stops reading as a guide and starts competing with your content; too small and it vanishes under normal room lighting. The default here is deliberately restrained. If you're printing on cream or textured paper, or on an inkjet that spreads ink, drop the dot size slightly — inkjet dot gain will do some of the work for you.

What spacing should I use for a bullet journal?
5mm, which is what virtually every commercial dot-grid notebook uses. That keeps your printed pages compatible with layouts and spreads designed by the wider bullet-journal community.
Can I make the dots lighter?
Yes — reduce the dot size, choose a lighter grey from the color presets, or both. Light grey dots at the smallest size are almost invisible once you've written over them, which is usually the goal.
What paper should I print dot grid on?
Anything from 100gsm up if you plan to use fountain pens or markers, to stop show-through. Standard 80gsm copier paper is fine for pencil and ballpoint. Heavier paper also holds up better if you're going to bind or hole-punch the sheets.
Is dot grid better than graph paper?
For writing and journaling, usually yes — the dots give you alignment without boxing in your content, and the finished page looks cleaner. For technical drawing, plotting and anything where you're counting squares, printed grid lines are easier to follow.

Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
