Three directions, one lattice
Take horizontal lines, add a second family rotated 60°, then a third rotated 120°, and the intersections produce a perfect equilateral triangle tiling. Every small triangle is identical, and any six of them meet to form a hexagon — which is why triangle paper and hex paper are really two views of the same underlying lattice.
Tessellations and pattern design
The equilateral triangle is one of only three regular polygons that tile the plane, and it's the most flexible of them for pattern work: triangles combine into rhombi, trapezoids, hexagons and stars without leaving gaps. That makes this the natural paper for designing repeating patterns, Islamic geometric ornament, and patchwork blocks built from half- and quarter-triangles.
Ternary and technical use
In materials science, geology and chemistry, triangular grids underpin ternary plots — diagrams where three components sum to 100% and any composition is a single point inside the triangle. Soil texture classification and alloy phase diagrams both use this form, and hand-plotting on triangle paper is still a common teaching exercise.

How is this different from isometric paper?

Can I make hexagons on triangle paper?
Yes. Any six triangles sharing a vertex form a regular hexagon, so hexagonal patterns draw naturally on this grid — which is useful when you want both the hexes and their internal subdivisions visible.
What spacing works best?
1/4 inch is a solid default for pattern design. Choose finer spacing for intricate geometric ornament and coarser spacing for quilt blocks, where each triangle usually represents a whole fabric piece.
Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
