How isometric projection works
In a true isometric drawing the three axes of a cube are drawn 120° apart on the page, which puts two of them at 30° from the horizontal and one vertical. The consequence that makes it so useful: distances along all three axes stay at the same scale. Unlike a perspective drawing, you can measure directly off an isometric sketch, which is why it became the standard for assembly diagrams, patent drawings and pipework schematics.
With or without verticals
Turning verticals on gives you the classic isometric paper used for 3D technical sketching — cubes and boxes essentially draw themselves. Turning them off leaves a pure triangular lattice, which is what you want for tessellation work, hex-adjacent game maps, and certain quilting and tiling patterns.

What's the difference between isometric graph paper and isometric dot paper?
They describe the same lattice. Graph paper prints the full lines, which is easier to follow when you're learning or drawing complex forms. Dot paper marks only the intersections, giving a much cleaner finished sketch. Both are on this site.
Can I use this for drawing cubes and 3D shapes?
That's exactly what it's for. Draw verticals for the vertical edges of your object and follow the 30° lines for the two horizontal directions; a unit cube becomes a hexagon made of three rhombi.
Does isometric paper work for perspective drawing?
No — isometric projection deliberately has no vanishing point, so parallel lines stay parallel and nothing gets smaller with distance. For true perspective drawing use the perspective grid paper instead.
Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
