What Is Calcudoku?

Calcudoku is a math-logic puzzle played on an N×N grid, divided into irregularly shaped “cages” outlined by thick borders. Each cage shows a target number and an operation (+, −, ×, ÷); the digits you place in that cage must combine — in some order — to reach the target. Like a Latin square, every row and column also uses each digit exactly once. Calcudoku is the generic name for this puzzle type; the same style is trademarked and sold commercially as KenKen®. Ours is a free, generic-form generator you can use without a license. You can also play a fresh daily Calcudoku at /play/calcudoku.

How Our Calcudoku Generator Guarantees a Unique Solution

Every puzzle starts from a randomly filled Latin square, which we then partition into connected cages of 1–4 cells and assign an operation and target for each. A constraint-propagation solver checks the finished puzzle to confirm exactly one digit arrangement satisfies every row, column, and cage constraint at once. If a candidate has more than one solution, it’s discarded and we try again with a new cage layout.

How to Solve a Calcudoku

  1. Start with single-cell cages — these show the digit directly, no math required.
  2. Work small cages first — 2-cell subtraction or division cages usually allow only a couple of digit pairs.
  3. Apply Latin-square rules — every row and column must contain each digit exactly once, just like sudoku.
  4. Cross off options as you go — combine cage math with row/column elimination until every cell is forced.

Who Uses This Generator

Math teachers use Calcudoku to build printable arithmetic-and-logic warm-ups that reinforce mental math beyond simple worksheets. Amazon KDP publishers use it to fill math-puzzle activity books in a niche adjacent to (but distinct from) sudoku. Adult logic-puzzle fans use it for a fresh, guaranteed-solvable KenKen-style puzzle any time they want one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Calcudoku puzzle?

Calcudoku is a math-logic puzzle on an N×N grid split into cages, each with a target number and operation. Digits placed in a cage must combine to hit the target, and every row and column uses each digit exactly once, like a Latin square.

Is Calcudoku the same as KenKen?

They’re the same style of puzzle. KenKen® is a specific trademarked brand name; Calcudoku is the generic term for the puzzle type. Our generator produces the same style of puzzle under its generic name.

Do the puzzles always have one solution?

Yes. Every Calcudoku is checked with a constraint solver before you see it, so each has exactly one solution reachable by logic alone — no guessing required.

Can I use these puzzles commercially, like for Amazon KDP?

Yes. The generator exports clean, commercial-use PDFs with a full answer key at KDP-ready trim sizes (Letter, A4, 6×9, 7×10). Free PDFs carry a small “Made with PuzzlePage.app” credit line; a watermark-free export is included with Premium ($2.99 day pass or $6.99/month).
