What Is the Jumble Puzzle?

Jumble is the classic newspaper word puzzle that has run daily since 1954, now syndicated by Tribune Content Agency to hundreds of papers. Each puzzle gives you four scrambled words (five or six in some editions). Certain squares in each answer are circled; once you unscramble all the words, the circled letters form one last scramble whose answer is the punchline to that day’s cartoon — usually a pun. The structure means one stubborn word can block the whole puzzle, which is exactly the situation this solver is built for.

How to Work the Circled Letters

1. Unscramble every word first. Type each jumbled word in a row above; the bold results use exactly your letters.
2. Pull the circled letters. In the newspaper, specific squares are circled. Write down the letter that lands in each circled square of your solved words.
3. Count against the answer blanks.The puzzle shows the final answer’s shape, like “___ ___” for a three-letter and five-letter word. That shape tells you which suggestion below is right.
4. Match the pun. Jumble finals are almost always wordplay on the cartoon caption. If two suggestions fit the blanks, the groan-worthy one is the answer.

How the Jumble Solver Works

The solver uses the sorted-letter anagram map, the same technique behind our word unscrambler. Every word in the 168,551-word public-domain ENABLE list is indexed under its letters sorted alphabetically, so BACON and its scramble NOCAB both reduce to the key ABCNO. Solving a jumbled word is then a single hash lookup — effectively instant. The final answer helper goes further: because Jumble punchlines are often phrases, it enumerates every way to split your circled letters into two groups, looks up each group in the same map, and pairs the hits into two-word suggestions (capped at 50).

Worked Example

Say the puzzle gives you NUFYN, RAOMJ, TIDBAN, and CUPTEA. Typing them above yields FUNNY, MAJOR, BANDIT, and TEACUP. Suppose the circled squares capture the letters N-A-B-T-U-P from those answers. Enter NABTUP into the final answer helper: no single six-letter word uses those letters, but the two-word suggestions include “nab put”, “ban put”, and “tab pun” — and if the cartoon shows a comedian under arrest, “NAB PUT”… no, “PUT” makes no pun, so you test “TAB PUN” against the blanks “___ ___” (3 and 3) and the joke clicks. The helper narrows dozens of possibilities to a shortlist; the blanks and the pun pick the winner.
