Which order to learn the times tables

There is no single official order, but many teachers start with the tables that have a simple pattern and save the rest for later:

• 0s and 1s are one rule each: times 0 is 0, times 1 is the same number.
• 2s are doubles, 10s put a zero on the end, and 5s end in 0 or 5.
• 9s have the finger trick, and the digits of 9 × 1 through 9 × 10 add up to 9.
• By the time a child reaches the 7s and 8s, turnarounds (7 × 3 = 3 × 7) mean only a handful of facts are new — 7 × 7, 7 × 8 and 8 × 8 are the ones worth a separate pile.

There is no separate 0 times table deck: 0 × 0 is on the 0–12 deck, and every table starts with its own × 0 card.
