Tips for learning subtraction facts 0–20

  • Subtract back through ten: 15 − 7 is 15 − 5 (10), then 2 more, 8.
  • Think addition: 13 − 5 asks 5 + ? = 13, and the answer is 8.
  • Taking away 10 just drops the tens: 17 − 10 = 7.

How many pages the 231 cards print on

The answers print on the back. The PDF puts an answer page straight after each page of questions, so printed double-sided, each sheet of paper has questions on one side and their answers on the other.

Cards per pagePages in the PDFSheets of paper, double-sidedGood for
2 per page — extra large232116Whole-class flashing from the front of the room.
4 per page — large11658Small group work and pocket charts.
6 per page — standard7839The usual choice. Fits a rubber band.
8 per page — compact5829Fact decks and word rings.
9 per page — small5226Big decks where paper matters.

Printing the answers on the back

  1. Open the print dialog and turn on two-sided (duplex) printing.
  2. Choose flip on long edge (sometimes called long-edge binding). The pages are portrait, and each answer page reverses the order of every row, so the answer to the top-left card prints behind the top-left card.
  3. Don’t pick “flip on short edge” — it puts the answers behind the wrong cards.
  4. Print the first sheet, hold it up to a window to check, then print the rest and cut.

No duplex printer? Turn the answer backs off in the maker and print fronts only, or print the odd pages, put the stack back in the tray, and print the even pages. Printers feed differently, so test with one sheet first.

Subtraction Facts 0–20 flash cards — questions people ask

How many subtraction facts are there to 20?

231: every subtraction where the starting number is 20 or less and the answer is not below zero, from 0 − 0 up to 20 − 20.

What does "subtraction facts 0–20" mean on this page?

Facts within 20: the number you start from is 20 or less, so every number on the card is between 0 and 20.

Which grade learns subtraction facts to 20?

In the Common Core, second grade is expected to add and subtract fluently within 20 and to know all sums of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of the year.

Are there any negative answers?

No. Each card is written as the subtraction that undoes an addition fact, so the answer is never below zero.

How many pages do the subtraction facts 0–20 flash cards print on?

231 cards. At 6 cards per page that is 39 sheets of paper printed double-sided (78 pages in the PDF); at 9 per page it is 26 sheets. Two cards a page makes big cards for the front of the room; nine a page saves paper.

How do I print the answers on the back?

Print double-sided and choose "flip on long edge" (some printers call it long-edge binding). Each answer page reverses the order of every row, so when the sheet flips, every answer lands behind its own question. Flipping on the short edge puts answers behind the wrong cards, so check one sheet before you cut.

Can I take out the facts my child already knows?

Yes. The "Print 231 flash cards" button opens the deck in the flash card maker as an editable list, one fact per line. Delete the lines you don't need, or add your own, before you print.
