What Is Kakuro?

Kakuro — sometimes called cross-sums — is a number-logic puzzle played on a grid of white cells and dark clue blocks. Each dark block carries small clue numbers: one for the sum of the run of white cells to its right, one for the sum of the run below it. You fill every white cell with a digit from 1–9 so that no digit repeats within a single run and every run adds up to its clue. There’s no arithmetic guessing involved — a well-formed Kakuro can always be solved by logic, like a numeric crossword. You can also play a fresh daily Kakuro at /play/kakuro.

How Our Kakuro Generator Guarantees a Unique Solution

Every puzzle is built with a generate-and-verify loop. We lay out a connected grid of runs, fill it with non-repeating digits biased toward “magic” sums that are hard to duplicate, derive the block clues from that fill, then run a constraint-propagation solver over the clues alone. We only keep a puzzle if the solver proves exactly one digit arrangement satisfies every clue — if not, we discard it and try again.

How to Solve a Kakuro

  1. Start with short runs — a 2-cell run with a small or large clue often has only one possible digit pair.
  2. Remember no repeats — within any single run (across or down), every digit is used at most once.
  3. Cross-reference — a cell belongs to both an across run and a down run; combine both clues to narrow candidates.
  4. Work outward — once a few cells are pinned down, the remaining sums become much easier to solve.

Who Uses This Generator

Math teachers use it to build printable warm-ups that reinforce mental addition without repetitive worksheets. Amazon KDP publishers use it to fill logic-puzzle activity books with a niche that’s underserved compared to sudoku. Adult logic-puzzle fans use it for a fresh, guaranteed-solvable Kakuro whenever they want one, without waiting for a newspaper or app.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Kakuro puzzle?

Kakuro is a numeric crossword-style puzzle. Clue numbers in dark blocks give the sum of the adjoining run of white cells; you fill each run with non-repeating digits 1–9 that add up to the clue.

Do the puzzles always have one solution?

Yes. Every Kakuro is checked with a constraint solver before you see it, so each has exactly one solution reachable by logic alone — no guessing required.

What sizes are available?

Three sizes: 6×6 (Easy), 8×8 (Medium), and 10×10 (Hard). Larger grids have more runs and take longer to solve.

Can I use these Kakuro puzzles commercially, like for Amazon KDP?

Yes. The generator exports clean, commercial-use PDFs with a full answer key at KDP-ready trim sizes (Letter, A4, 6×9, 7×10). Free PDFs carry a small “Made with PuzzlePage.app” credit line; a watermark-free export is included with Premium ($2.99 day pass or $6.99/month).
