Choosing staves per page
Ten to twelve staves is the standard for general manuscript paper and suits most handwriting. Drop to six or eight if you're writing for a beginner, notating large, or want room for lyrics and chord symbols above each line. Go to fourteen or more for dense sketching where you're capturing ideas rather than producing a fair copy. The layout spreads whatever you choose evenly down the page rather than bunching staves at the top.
Why there's no printed clef
Manuscript paper is traditionally sold blank precisely because the clef depends on what you're writing — treble for most melody instruments, bass for cello and left hand, alto for viola, percussion for unpitched parts. Leaving the staves empty means one sheet serves every use, and it's what professional manuscript paper does. Draw your own clef at the start of each system.
Bar lines
Setting bars per line pre-divides each staff into equal measures, which helps when you're teaching rhythm, notating something with a known bar count, or want a tidy, evenly spaced page. Set it to zero for completely open staves — the right choice when you're composing and don't yet know how much space each bar will need.

How many staves are on a page of blank sheet music?

Why doesn't the staff paper have a treble clef?
Blank manuscript paper is deliberately clefless so it works for any instrument or clef — treble, bass, alto or percussion. You write the clef you need at the start of each system, exactly as on professional manuscript paper.
What size staff should I choose?
Medium suits most adult handwriting. Choose large for children, beginners, or anyone who needs large print — the wider staff spacing makes note heads much easier to place accurately. Small fits more music per page for sketching.
Can I use this sheet music paper commercially?
Yes. The blank paper is free to print and use for any purpose, including lessons you charge for, published method books and sheet music you sell — there is no attribution requirement. Free sheets carry a small puzzlepage.app wordmark and QR code in the bottom margin; Premium removes it entirely.
Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
