Four strings, reading left to right
The four vertical lines are the ukulele's strings, ordered G C E A from left to right in standard tuning. As with guitar diagrams, this is the view you'd get holding the instrument upright and facing you. Horizontal lines are frets, and the heavy line at the top is the nut.
Re-entrant tuning
Standard soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles use re-entrant tuning, where the fourth string (G) is pitched above the third (C) rather than below it. That's why ukulele chord shapes often sound higher and more compact than the same fingering pattern would on guitar. The diagram doesn't show pitch, only position, so the same box works whether your uke is re-entrant or has a low G.
Why four frets is usually enough
The ukulele's short scale and four strings mean most chord shapes sit within the first four frets, so a four-fret box is the norm — it keeps the diagrams compact and lets you fit a lot of chords on a reference page. Increase the fret count for movable shapes higher up the neck.

How many frets should a ukulele chord diagram show?

Yes — the diagram shows positions, not pitches, so it works for any four-string tuning including baritone's D G B E. Just note the tuning on your sheet.
What do the O and X symbols mean?
Written above a string, O means play it open and X means don't play it at all. Write them in the space above the nut on each diagram.
Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
