What makes it a grand staff
Two things distinguish a grand staff from two unrelated staves: the curly brace joining them at the left, and the bar lines running continuously through both. Together they tell the reader that the staves sound simultaneously and share a metre — which is why the vertical alignment between the hands matters so much when you're writing by hand. Both are printed here.
The gap between the staves
The spacing between the two staves of a system is set to roughly one staff height, which is the conventional engraving distance. That gap is not decorative: it's the room ledger lines need for notes between the two staves — middle C and its neighbours — without them colliding with either staff. Too tight and the middle register becomes unreadable.
Writing for piano by hand
Draw a treble clef on the upper staff and a bass clef on the lower one at the start of each system, then keep simultaneous notes vertically aligned as you write. Pre-dividing the systems into bars helps enormously with this: it gives you a visual reference for keeping both hands in the same place in the measure, which is the most common problem with handwritten keyboard music.

How many systems fit on a page?

Can I use this for organ music?
For the two manuals, yes. Full organ scores also need a third staff for the pedal part — for that, use the blank staff paper and rule your own three-staff systems, or print grand staff paper and add a pedal staff beneath.

Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
