Between dot grid and graph paper
A dot tells you where a point is but nothing about direction. A full grid tells you everything but dominates the page. A cross does both jobs at once: the two short arms show you the horizontal and vertical at that exact point, so ruling a straight line or squaring up a box is easier than on dot grid — without the visual cage of printed gridlines.
Tuning the arms
Arm length is the control that changes the character of the sheet. Short arms read almost like dots and stay well out of the way. Longer arms approach a dashed grid and are noticeably easier to align against, which helps if you're drawing a lot of boxes, tables or technical layouts by hand.

What is cross grid paper?
Paper marked with a small plus sign at each grid intersection rather than continuous lines. It provides the same alignment structure as graph paper with far less printed ink.
Is cross grid better than dot grid?
It depends on what you draw. Crosses make it easier to rule straight lines and square up boxes because each mark shows direction as well as position. Dots are quieter and better if you mostly write. Both are on this site — try each.
What spacing should I use?
5mm matches standard bullet journals and is the most common choice. Use 1/4 inch for a slightly roomier grid, or 1cm when you're drawing large layouts and want minimal interference.
Will the crosses show in a scan?
Only faintly, if you use a light grey. Choose a lighter preset and a short arm length if you plan to scan or photograph the finished page.

Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
