Why engineering pads look like this
The traditional layout exists to make handwritten calculations reviewable. The fine grid keeps columns of figures and unit conversions aligned; the heavy every-fifth line lets you find your place without counting; the border defines a consistent working area that survives photocopying and scanning; and the title block records whose work it is and when — which matters when calculations become part of a project record.
The green ink
The characteristic pale green is a legibility choice, not decoration. A light green grid has enough contrast to guide handwriting but drops away visually behind pencil and ink, and it historically reproduced faintly (or not at all) on older photocopiers — so a copied page showed the calculations cleanly without the grid competing. You can change the color here, but green is the default for a reason.
Grid density
Genuine engineering pads are usually 5×5 or 10×10 squares to the inch. The 1/10 inch default with accents every five lines reproduces the common 5×5 look. Choose a coarser spacing if you're writing larger, or a finer one if you're plotting data by hand.

Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
