The triangular lattice
Each dot sits at the corner of an equilateral triangle, with rows offset by half a step and spaced at √3/2 of the horizontal spacing. Any three neighbouring dots form a 60° triangle, and any six form a hexagon — which is why the same paper serves isometric drawing, tessellation work and hex-grid design equally well.
Better for finished work
Because there are no printed lines to erase around or draw over, isometric dot paper is the usual choice when the drawing is the end product rather than a working sketch — pattern design, hand-drawn isometric illustration, quilt and tile layouts. Scanned or photographed, light grey dots effectively disappear.
In the classroom
Isometric dot paper is standard issue for teaching volume, nets and 3D representation in middle-school geometry. Students draw unit cubes by connecting three dots per face, which makes counting volume concrete rather than abstract — and it removes the coordination problem of drawing accurate 30° lines freehand.

How do I draw a cube on isometric dot paper?
Draw a rhombus for the top face using four dots, then drop vertical lines from three of its corners and close the two visible side faces. The result is a regular hexagon divided into three rhombi.
What dot spacing should I choose?
1/4 inch is a good general default. Use a wider spacing for younger students or bolder drawings, and a finer one when you need more detail per sheet.
Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
