How are the clues checked before you see them?

Three ways, and all of them happen before the draft reaches the panel. The most important is the one that catches the classic model failure.

• A clue that contains its answer is dropped

  "DENVER is the Mile High City" is not a clue, it is a spelling test. Any clue containing its own answer is thrown out before the draft is built.

• Half-written entries are dropped

  An answer with no clue, or a clue with no answer, would print as a blank line in the ACROSS column. Neither survives.

• Answers are checked against what the grid can lay

  Letters only, 3 to 12 of them, no duplicates. Long answers interlock badly and a repeated answer breaks the numbering.

If too few pairs survive that, the result is refused and the credit is returned. In the geography example above, 8 answers came back and all 8 laid into the grid on the first attempt.
