Why page count comes first
Almost every other KDP decision depends on your page count. It sets the spine width, which sets the cover size. It sets the inside margin, which grows as the book gets thicker. It sets the printing cost, which sets your royalty. Yet most publishers only find out their real page count after the interior is finished. This calculator works it out from the plan instead, so you can size the book before you build it.
What goes into the total
- Front matter. A title page and a copyright page, plus an optional dedication and a how-to-solve page.
- Puzzle pages. One page per puzzle, or half that at two per page.
- Answer keys. Packed several to a page at the back of the book, more on larger trims.
- A blank page if needed, because KDP interiors always have an even number of pages.
Answer key density is an estimate per puzzle type. The Book Studio packs keys by their measured height and tells you the exact page count after it builds, so treat this number as a close plan rather than a promise.
Two numbers to aim for
The first is 24, KDP's minimum. Below it the book simply cannot be published as a paperback. The second is 110. Black-ink paperbacks in the US print at one flat price from 24 to 110 pages, so a 60-page book and a 110-page book cost the same to make. How many puzzles do I need for a KDP puzzle book?
KDP's minimum is 24 pages. With a title page, copyright page and answer keys, about 18 one-per-page puzzles is the practical floor. Most puzzle books aim for 50 to 100 puzzles, and a black-ink book can reach 110 pages at the same printing cost as a 24-page one.
How many answer keys fit on a page?
It depends on the puzzle. Small grids like sudoku fit about four solutions to a 6 x 9 page, while word searches and crosswords fit about two. Larger trims fit more. Should I print two puzzles per page?
Two per page works well for short puzzles such as word ladders, cryptograms and word scrambles, where one per page leaves most of the sheet empty. Grid puzzles shrink at two per page, which is fine on 8.5 x 11 but can feel cramped on 6 x 9, and large-print books should stay at one per page.
Why does my page count always come out even?
KDP prints on both sides of every sheet, so an interior always has an even number of pages. If your content ends on an odd page, a blank page is added at the end.
What is the best page count for a $9.99 puzzle book?
On Amazon.com, 110 pages. Black-ink regular-trim paperbacks cost a flat $2.30 to print from 24 to 110 pages, so every page up to 110 is free content. Past 110 the cost rises by $0.012 per page.
