The barcode area in numbers
KDP reserves a 2 inch by 1.2 inch rectangle in the lower right corner of the back cover for the ISBN barcode. We place it 0.25 inches from the spine fold and 0.25 inches from the bottom trim, matching KDP's own cover templates, and the same position our Book Studio keeps clear on every cover it renders. Anything you put inside that rectangle will be covered.
Designers usually need the position in one of two ways. If you design the back cover on its own canvas at trim size, use the offsets from the back trim corner. If you design the whole wrap as one file, use the offsets in the full-wrap file, which include the 0.125 inch bleed on the left and top.
Designing around it
- Plan the back cover copy to end above it. On a 6 x 9 book the box takes up the bottom 1.45 inches of the right side.
- Keep it off busy art. A white barcode panel over a photo can look pasted on. A calm area of color works better.
- Leave your own price and publisher logo out of the box. Put them to the left of it instead.
Why it matters
A cover with text under the barcode is one of the more common reasons KDP sends a book back for changes. The fix is quick, but it costs a review cycle and often a launch day. Checking the box position before you finish the design avoids it.

Where does KDP put the barcode?
In the lower right corner of the back cover, in an area 2 inches wide and 1.2 inches tall. This tool places it 0.25 inch from the spine fold and 0.25 inch from the bottom trim, the position KDP's cover templates use.
Do I need to add a barcode to my cover myself?
No. If you leave the area clear, KDP adds the barcode for you, whether you use a free KDP ISBN or your own. If you add your own barcode, KDP asks you to tell it during upload so it does not print a second one.
Can I put artwork behind the barcode area?
Background color and texture can run behind it, but keep text, faces and important details out of the box, because KDP prints a white rectangle with the barcode over it.
Does the barcode position change with page count?
Not relative to the back cover. It is always measured from the back cover's trim edges. In the full-wrap file it does not move either, because the back panel sits on the left and the spine grows to its right.
What if my back cover design needs the barcode somewhere else?
KDP's automatic barcode goes in the lower right. If you want it elsewhere, you would need to supply your own barcode, which in practice means using your own ISBN. For most puzzle books, designing around the lower right corner is simpler.
