Bids, tricks and bags

Each partnership adds their two bids together. Take at least that many tricks and you score 10 points per trick bid, plus 1 point for each extra trick. Those extra tricks are bags, and every time a partnership collects ten of them, they lose 100 points. Fall short of your bid and you lose 10 points per trick bid.

Nil bids

A player who bids nil is promising to take no tricks at all. Succeed and the partnership gets 100 points; fail and it loses 100. Score the nil separately from the partner's bid.

What are bags in Spades?

Tricks taken beyond your bid. Each is worth 1 point, but every ten bags costs your partnership 100 points.

What do you play Spades to?

500 points is standard. Some groups also end the game if a team falls to minus 200.

Why are there four columns per team?

Bid and tricks decide the score, and bags carry over from hand to hand, so it's easiest to keep them all in view.

Printing tips

  • Print a stack. Set Pages in PDF to 10 or 20 and keep a pad in the game box.
  • Large print for easier reading. Bigger type and taller rows help older players and anyone scoring across the table.
  • Landscape for big groups. With six or more players, landscape gives every column more room to write.
