How to score bowling

Mark each ball in the small boxes at the top of the frame and write the running total underneath. A strike (X) scores 10 plus your next two balls. A spare (/) scores 10 plus your next ball. An open frame just scores the pins you knocked down. That's why strike and spare frames are filled in late: you need the next ball or two before you can total them.

The tenth frame

The tenth frame has three boxes because a strike or spare there earns the bonus balls you'd normally get in the next frame. Strike in the tenth and you throw two more; spare and you throw one more. A perfect game is twelve strikes in a row for 300.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you score a strike in bowling?

10 points plus the pins from your next two balls. Three strikes in a row (a turkey) gives the first frame 30.

What is a handicap in bowling?

Extra pins added to a bowler's score so players of different averages can compete. Leagues usually set it as a percentage of the gap between your average and a base score. Turn on the handicap column to record it.

How many bowlers fit on one sheet?

Up to ten per game. With fewer bowlers each frame gets taller and easier to write in.

Printing tips

  • Print a stack. Set Pages in PDF to 10 or 20 and keep a pad in the game box.
  • Large print for easier reading. Bigger type and taller rows help older players and anyone scoring across the table.
  • Landscape for big groups. With six or more players, landscape gives every column more room to write.
