Quick answer: Every PuzzlePage generator is free for KDP work, and the commercial license costs nothing. Free PDFs carry a small “Made with PuzzlePage.app” footer credit. The $14.99/mo Publisher plan is what exports a complete, credit-free book interior.

If you are searching for a puzzle generator for KDP, you are choosing a tool. So this is a spec sheet with the price attached, and every number in it comes from our own pricing page and code.

📌 Key Takeaways

  • All 25+ generators are free forever, at KDP trim sizes, with answer keys.
  • Commercial rights are included at every tier, free included. You buy clean pages, not permission.
  • Free PDFs carry a small “Made with PuzzlePage.app” footer credit — a credit line, not a watermark across the grid.
  • Composing a book and proofing six real pages is free; the complete interior needs the $14.99/mo Publisher plan.
  • Plus ($6.99/mo) and the $2.99 day pass do not unlock the Book Builder.

What does a KDP puzzle generator have to do that an ordinary one doesn’t?

A classroom generator makes one good puzzle. A KDP generator has to make a book, and books fail differently: declared page count has to match the rendered PDF or the cover spine is wrong, the gutter has to widen with thickness, answer keys have to be a packed section at the back, and the puzzles have to be new every build.

Ours seeds and engine-verifies every puzzle, so two books from one template are different books. Page arithmetic is gated by a matrix that renders 109 real PDFs and asserts declared pages equal physical pages at every trim — a test that has caught four shipping bugs.

What can you build without paying anything?

On the single-puzzle generators: all 25+ makers, 5 puzzles per generation (10 after a free email verify), every paper size including the 6×9 and 7×10 KDP trims, print or PDF, answer keys included. Each PDF carries a small “Made with PuzzlePage.app” credit line in the footer. The grid itself is clean.

Inside the KDP Book Builder: you can compose the entire book before paying. Pick from 37 researched templates or start blank, choose your trim, add sections across 18 puzzle types, set a difficulty ramp and front matter, and size the book at 18 to 120 puzzles. The previewer renders the first six pages of the real interior, and a proof PDF of those puzzles downloads free.

That proof is the opening pages of your actual book, not a demo file: page three of the proof is byte-identical to page three of the paid build. It carries a diagonal SAMPLE stamp plus the credit line and a QR code on every page.

Not free: the complete interior PDF and the full page-by-page outline. Our KDP plans page says it plainly — no free trial, no free builds.

Free vs Plus vs Publisher vs Pro: what $14.99 actually buys

The row that surprises people is the Book Builder row. Plus is the teacher-and-hobbyist plan: every generator feature, none of the book tooling. Buying Plus expecting to publish a book is the most common mistake we see, so it is in the table, not the fine print.

The 18 book puzzle types are sudoku, killer sudoku, X-sudoku, calcudoku, kakuro, crossmath, star battle, nonogram, ripple effect, number loop, word ladder, word search, number search, crossword, cryptogram, word scramble, word fill-in and maze. Five of them — word search, crossword, cryptogram, word scramble, word fill-in — take your own theme or word list. Still deciding? Read which puzzle types work best in KDP activity books first.

Can you legally sell what the generator makes?

Yes, and you do not have to pay us to be allowed to. This is where free generators differ from each other most.

The PuzzlePage license puts it this way: “every puzzle you generate on PuzzlePage is yours. Use it at home, in your classroom, or in products you sell — including Amazon KDP puzzle books. No royalties, no attribution requirement, no fine-print surprises.”

Two clauses matter most. Under “Commercial rights are included free”: “You do not need Premium to have commercial rights. Premium adds watermark-free pages, Word export, styling, and 100-puzzle batch export for book production.” And under “No attribution required”: free PDFs carry the footer credit line, a paid plan removes it, and no credit is owed in your book, listing, or cover.

The restrictions are the entire list: don’t resell or sublicense access to the PuzzlePage service itself, don’t scrape or automate it in ways that overload it, and don’t produce unlawful, harmful, or offensive content. The binding text is Section 2 (Permitted Use) of the Terms of Service.

One consequence: a free interior prints that credit line and QR on every page — right for a proof, wrong for a book sold under your name. A paid interior never gets it.

What does going from generator to uploaded interior look like?

The real sequence for a 6×9 large-print word search book, the most common first title in this category:

  1. Start from a template. Thirty-seven ship with niche reasoning attached — large-print word search for seniors, cryptogram quotes, kids’ activity 8–12 — or start blank.
  2. Set the trim and shape. Choose 6×9, add 80 word searches ramping easy to hard, one per page, type scaled up. The 18-puzzle minimum exists because KDP rejects interiors under 24 pages.
  3. Proof it on paper before you pay. Print the free 6-puzzle sample at actual size. Type that reads fine at 100% zoom is routinely too small on a 6×9 page — this is the step that saves a large-print book from being large-print in name only.
  4. Subscribe and build. A print-ready PDF: title page, optional dedication and introduction, puzzle pages, then the packed answer keys, numbered continuously.
  5. Let the margin check run. Pages use a 0.75in margin on all four edges, inside KDP’s 0.25in outside minimum and 0.375in gutter minimum for books to 150 pages, and a compliance report tests both against your real page count on every build.
  6. Upload and price. The interior goes straight into KDP. You still supply the cover — the cover generator with spine math is a Pro first-access item, not a shipped feature.

How does page count change what the book earns?

Amazon prints a black-and-white paperback of 24 to 110 pages for a flat $2.30 with no per-page charge, and pays 50% royalty at or below $9.98 and 60% at $9.99 and above.

So a 30-page book costs exactly what a 110-page book costs to print, and $9.99 on a 110-page book returns (0.60 × $9.99) − $2.30 = $3.69 a sale where $9.98 returns $2.69 — a penny of price for a dollar of royalty. That is why the builder caps at 120 puzzles: 110 printed pages is the last page the flat rate covers. The full royalty and printing-cost tables run every price point and page band.

Large print and that ceiling solve each other: bigger type means fewer puzzles per page, but pages up to 110 cost nothing extra, so you spread the same puzzle count over more pages and sell the comfort instead of absorbing the cost. That is why large-print word search for the senior niche keeps working.

When is this the wrong tool for you?

Four honest cases, because a page that claims none is not worth trusting on anything else.

  • You want keyword and niche research. We don’t do it; we link free methods instead of bundling a worse version of a research platform.
  • You want covers. Not shipped — a roadmap entry, not something you are buying today.
  • You want to try a full build first. You can’t. The free proof settles layout and typography; it does not produce a usable book.
  • You need one puzzle for a classroom. Stay on the free generators.

If none of those are dealbreakers, the KDP publisher hub maps everything aimed at sellers, and the Book Builder is free to open and compose in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a genuinely free puzzle generator for KDP?

Yes, with one caveat. All 25+ PuzzlePage generators are free at KDP trim sizes with answer keys and a full commercial license, and free PDFs carry a small “Made with PuzzlePage.app” footer credit that any paid plan removes. Composing a whole book and proofing six real pages is free too; exporting the complete interior is not.

Does the $14.99 Publisher plan include the commercial license?

It does, but so does the free tier. The license page states that commercial rights are included free and that you do not need a paid plan to have them. What $14.99/mo adds is the Book Builder, interiors up to 120 puzzles with a packed answer-key section, 15 builds a day, and credit-free pages.

Will the $6.99 Plus plan or the $2.99 day pass unlock the Book Builder?

No. Those cover watermark-free single puzzles, Word export, styling and 100-puzzle batches. The Book Builder is gated to Publisher and Pro only, enforced in the entitlement code rather than the marketing copy.
