Sketching at the right proportions
The frames use real device proportions: phone at 375×667, tablet at 768×1024, desktop at 1440×900. It matters because layout decisions are proportion decisions. How much fits above the fold, whether a navigation bar can be horizontal, how many columns a grid can carry — all of it changes with the shape of the viewport. Sketching in an arbitrary rectangle produces ideas that don't survive contact with the actual screen.
Why paper first
Paper wireframing stays popular because it's fast and disposable. You can sketch a dozen layout ideas in the time it takes to set up one artboard, and because the sketches are visibly rough, people critique the structure rather than the visual design. Multiple frames per page also make it easy to sketch a whole flow — screen by screen — and see the journey at a glance.
The internal dot grid
The faint dots inside each frame give you alignment cues for columns, spacing and element edges without turning the sketch into a technical drawing. They're deliberately very light: enough to keep a sketch tidy, not enough to show up if you photograph the page to share with a team.

What size should a mobile wireframe be?
The phone frame here uses 375×667 proportions — the long-standing baseline mobile viewport. Exact pixel dimensions matter less than sketching in the correct aspect ratio.
Why sketch wireframes on paper?
Speed and disposability. You can explore many layouts quickly, and because paper sketches look rough, feedback focuses on structure and flow rather than on visual polish.
How many frames should I put on a page?
Four (2×2) is good for sketching a short flow. Use one or two larger frames when working out a single complex screen in detail.
What is the line across the top of each frame?
A status or title bar, included so the frame reads as a screen and so you account for the space real device chrome occupies. It can be switched off.
Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
