Choosing a layout
The nine-panel grid is the classic dense storytelling format — Watchmen made it famous — and it's excellent for beginners because it forces you to think about pacing rather than spectacle. Six-panel is the mainstream standard. Four-panel gives room for detail. A splash page is one full-page image for a big reveal. The varied layout mixes tier sizes, closer to how modern comics actually breathe across a page.
Gutters
The gutter is the white space between panels, and it's doing real narrative work: it's where the reader's mind fills in the action between one moment and the next. Wider gutters read as a longer time gap; tighter gutters read as rapid, near-continuous action. It's one of the few storytelling tools that's purely a layout decision, so it's worth adjusting deliberately rather than accepting a default.
The live-area guide
The dashed rectangle marks the live area — the region guaranteed to survive trimming when a comic is printed and bound. Anything important, especially lettering, needs to stay inside it. Art can extend past it if you intend a bleed, but a speech balloon that crosses the line risks losing a word to the trimmer. Professional comic board is printed with exactly this guide.

What size is a standard comic book page?
US comics are drawn on 11×17 inch board and printed at about 6.625×10.25 inches. Print this template on Tabloid for near-professional working size, or on Letter or A4 for a convenient practice size.
How many panels should a comic page have?
Five to nine for standard storytelling. Nine-panel grids create a dense, measured rhythm; fewer, larger panels slow the pace and give weight to individual moments.
What is the gutter in a comic?
The space between panels. Readers mentally fill in what happens there, so gutter width affects perceived timing — wider gutters imply a longer gap between moments.
What is the dashed border for?
It marks the live area that survives trimming during printing. Keep lettering and anything essential inside it; art can bleed past if that's the intent.
Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
