Draw in the right shape
Storyboarding in the wrong aspect ratio wastes work. A shot composed in 16:9 doesn't translate to a 9:16 vertical crop — the framing, headroom and everything at the edges changes completely. Because so much video is now shot for vertical platforms, the ratio choice matters more than it used to. Draw in the shape you'll deliver in.
Caption lines
The ruled lines under each frame are for the information the drawing can't carry: shot type and camera movement, dialogue or voiceover, duration, audio cues and transitions. Storyboards are working documents read by other people on a shoot, and a beautifully drawn board with no annotation is much less useful on the day than a rough one that's properly labelled.
Panels per page
Six panels (two columns of three) is the general-purpose default. Fewer, larger panels suit detailed key frames and client presentation; more, smaller panels suit fast thumbnailing where you're working out the sequence and rhythm rather than the content of individual shots. Numbering is printed automatically so shots stay identifiable when pages get separated.

Six is a common default. Use fewer, larger frames for detailed key art and client presentations, and more, smaller ones for rapid thumbnailing.

Can I get a vertical storyboard for social video?
Yes — choose the 9:16 aspect ratio for vertical frames sized for TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
