Why a border helps
Drawing inside a defined frame forces composition decisions that an open page lets you avoid. Where does the subject sit? What's cropped? What's the negative space doing? A border turns a drawing into a picture, which is why sketchbook exercises so often start by ruling one — and why thumbnail grids are the standard way to explore composition options quickly.
Rule of thirds
The optional dashed guides divide each frame into thirds both ways. Placing the main subject on a line, or at one of the four intersections, tends to produce a more dynamic composition than centring it. It's a starting heuristic rather than a law — but for thumbnailing and quick studies it's a genuinely useful default, and having it printed saves eyeballing.
Thumbnails vs single frames
A page of small frames is for exploring: six or nine quick compositional studies of the same subject, each taking a minute or two, to find the arrangement worth developing. A single large frame is for the developed drawing itself. Most artists work through both stages, and printing a thumbnail sheet before starting a finished piece is one of the highest-value habits in drawing.

Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
