What does the AI puzzle maker actually do?

It reads one sentence and writes the content of one sheet. The panel sits at the top of the controls rail, above the box where the word list normally goes.

Ask for "A word search about classic cars for a car-show goodie bag" and four things come back: a title, a themed list, a grid size chosen to fit that list, and one sentence explaining why it made those choices.

Why does the word list fit the grid?

Because the alternative is finding out at the printer. The word search engine silently drops any word longer than the grid it is placing into, so a 14 letter answer in a 10x10 grid vanishes without a word of complaint.

So the list is re-checked before you ever see it, and only then is the grid sized:

• Every word is measured

  Anything outside 3 to 12 letters is dropped, because that is the range the grid can actually place.

• Duplicates and shared roots are collapsed

  DRIVE and DRIVER cannot both survive, and neither can CAT and CATS. A solver reads those as one word twice.

• The grid is sized from what survived

  The size is picked after the checking, not before it, so the puzzle is built around the list you are actually getting.

• A thin result is refused outright

  If under 75% of what you asked for is left standing, the whole result is thrown away and your credit is returned.

The first sheet we printed this way was that car-show goodie bag. Fifteen words came back, all fifteen placed in the 13x13 grid, and the only thing we changed was the title.

The cryptogram is the one to watch

Ask the cryptogram maker for "Short, upbeat sayings about gardening for a seniors' activity sheet" and you get ten phrases back, each between 25 and 90 characters. One phrase is one puzzle, so ten phrases is a ten page activity pack.

The length window is the easy half. Under 25 characters a cryptogram is guessable on sight, and over 90 it stops fitting the line.

The interesting rule is the variety one: no two phrases may open with the same two words. A page of "The garden is...", "The garden was...", "The garden gives..." is one puzzle printed ten times, and it is the single most common way an AI cryptogram maker goes wrong.

It will also refuse to put a real person's name on a saying unless it is certain they said it. A misattributed quote is the kind of error that gets printed, photocopied and handed out thirty times before anybody checks.

Every maker asks the model for the thing it can actually use. A word list is useless to a crossword and a set of clues is useless to a sudoku, so the prompt, the checks and the limits are different in each one.

What if you do not know what to type?

Type "cars" and press Write my prompt. For 1 credit it hands back the prompt you should have written, sitting in the box ready to edit, plus two or three short notes on what it added and why.

Those notes are the point. After two or three goes most people stop pressing the button, because they have seen what a good prompt names: the audience, the difficulty and a count.

It is a separate button and a separate credit, and the panel says so before you press it. A free helper on a surface this cheap to hit is an open invitation, and a hidden charge is worse than a visible one.

The honest part

It is a beta, and AI writes confident wrong answers

Read what it gives you before you print thirty copies. A word list can only be dull, but a clue, a definition or a translation states a fact, and a wrong one gets copied into thirty exercise books.

Checking eight clues takes about forty seconds. That is the whole difference between a drafted sheet and a checked one.

It writes the content, you still own the puzzle

Nothing the AI writes reaches a PDF directly. The draft lands in the same boxes you would have typed into, so you can delete a word, add five of your own, rewrite the title and then build the puzzle exactly as you always did.

If you sell what you make, Amazon asks you to declare AI-assisted content when you upload, and the KDP content guidelines spell out what counts.

It is paid only, and that is deliberate
