How to use a radar chart
Each spoke is one dimension and each ring is one point on the rating scale, counted outward from the centre. Mark your score on every spoke, join the marks, and the enclosed shape becomes the profile. The value is in the shape: strengths push the outline outward, weaknesses pull it in, and comparing two overlaid profiles is far quicker than reading two columns of numbers.
Axes and rings
Five to eight axes is the sweet spot. Fewer than five and a simple bar chart communicates better; more than about ten and the chart becomes a tangle nobody can read. Five rings maps naturally to a 1–5 rating scale, which is why it's the default — matching rings to your scale means no mental arithmetic when plotting.
Polygon or circular rings
Polygon rings connect the axes with straight lines, making it easy to judge where a point sits between two spokes — the standard choice for scoring. Circular rings look cleaner and work better when the chart is a presentation graphic rather than something to be filled in by hand.

Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
