Square units, always
The plot area is forced square and both axes use the same step, so one unit is genuinely the same length horizontally and vertically. This matters more than it sounds: on a stretched grid, circles plot as ellipses and the slope of a line reads wrong. Any graph where geometry matters — distance, gradient, transformations, conics — needs equal scaling to be meaningful.
Four quadrants or one
First-quadrant-only planes put the origin at the bottom-left and show positive values only. They suit younger students meeting coordinates for the first time, and any real-world data that can't be negative. Four-quadrant planes centre the origin and are what you need as soon as negative numbers, reflections and rotations enter the picture — typically from around grade six onward.
Range and labelling
A range of 10 gives the familiar −10 to +10 axes used across most middle-school worksheets. Larger ranges label every second or fifth unit automatically so the numbers stay legible rather than colliding. Printing two or four smaller grids per page is ideal for worksheets with several short graphing questions, and saves a lot of paper over a term.

Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
