Choosing the range and step
The step controls tick spacing and the range controls the extent. For integer work, a range of −10 to 10 with a step of 1 is the standard. For fractions, set the step to 0.25 or 0.5 and a narrower range like 0 to 5 — intermediate ticks appear shorter and unlabelled, which is exactly how a fraction number line should look. For decimals, use a step of 0.1 over 0 to 1.
Why number lines matter
The number line is the bridge between counting and the continuous number system. It makes negative numbers concrete as positions rather than abstractions, shows addition and subtraction as movement, and is the standard tool for teaching that between any two fractions there's always another. It stays useful well beyond elementary school — inequalities, absolute value and interval notation all live on it.
Multiple lines per page
Setting several lines per page gives each student a strip per question, or lets you cut them apart into individual number lines for desks and manipulative work. Eight to ten per page is a comfortable density on Letter or A4; fewer if students need room to write above and below each line.

Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
