Which clef do I need?
Treble clef is for violin, flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, the right hand of the piano and most voices. Bass clef covers cello, double bass, bassoon, trombone, tuba, bass guitar and the left hand of the piano. Alto clef is the viola's clef, and tenor clef is used for the upper range of the cello, bassoon and trombone. Guitar music is written in treble clef sounding an octave lower — the treble clef with a small 8 beneath it — and the percussion clef marks an unpitched drum staff.
Key and time signatures
Choose a key and the sharps or flats are printed in the correct order and on the correct lines for the clef you picked — the tenor clef's sharps included, which follow their own pattern. Time signatures include the common simple and compound meters as well as C (common time) and cut time. Bar lines, if you want them, divide the staff after the clef so the first measure isn't squeezed.
