Tips for a Better Crossword Grid

Mix word lengths — include words of 3, 4, 5, 6, and 8+ letters. Very short words (3–4 letters) act as connectors between longer words.
Choose words with common letters — E, T, A, O, I, N, S, R appear in many English words. Words sharing these letters cross more easily.
Aim for 10–20 words — below 8 and the grid is sparse; above 25 and some words will be left out. The sweet spot is 12–18 entries.
Write specific clues — a good clue has exactly one correct answer. Avoid clues that describe multiple words equally well.
Use a theme — themed crosswords (animals, US states, science terms, holidays) are more memorable and easier to share.
