How to play Number Loop (Slitherlink)

Number Loop, also called Slitherlink, is a loop puzzle played on a grid of dots. You draw a single continuous loop along the grid lines. Each numbered cell tells you exactly how many of its four sides the loop uses. The loop never crosses itself or branches.

  1. 1Draw one closed loop. Connect the dots with horizontal and vertical line segments to form a single loop with no branches and no crossings.
  2. 2Match every clue. A number in a cell is exactly how many of that cell's four edges are part of the loop. A 0 means the loop avoids that cell entirely; a 3 means it hugs three sides.
  3. 3Tap edges to draw or block. Tap an edge to draw it, tap again to mark it blocked (the loop won't use it), and again to clear.
  4. 4Start with 0s and 3s. Zeros let you block all four edges immediately; threes and adjacent clues create powerful forced moves.
  5. 5Keep the loop single. Every dot the loop reaches must have exactly two segments — no dead ends, no junctions.

Tips & strategy

Begin with the extreme clues. A 0 removes four edges at once, and corners with a 1 or 3 force specific segments. Watch each dot: once it has two loop segments, all its other edges are blocked, and once it has one segment plus blocked edges, the second is forced. Those two checks drive most of the solve.

Frequently asked questions

What is Slitherlink / Number Loop?

Slitherlink (Number Loop) is a logic puzzle where you draw a single closed loop on a grid of dots. Each numbered cell says how many of its four sides the loop uses, and the loop never branches or crosses.

What does a 0 mean in Slitherlink?

A 0 means none of that cell's four edges are part of the loop, so you can block all four immediately — a great starting point.

Can the loop cross itself?

No. The solution is one single closed loop with no crossings and no branches; every dot it touches has exactly two segments.

Is Number Loop hard?

It has a learning curve, but the corner and dot rules make it very logical. Start on Easy 5×5 grids and build up.

Is Number Loop free to play?

Yes — free with no sign-up, plus a live leaderboard and daily streaks.
