How do you play Golf Solitaire?
Golf Solitaire deals 35 cards face up in seven columns of five. Move the bottom card of any column onto the waste pile if it is one rank higher or lower than the waste card, regardless of suit. When you are stuck, draw a card from the stock. You win by clearing all 35 cards. In standard Golf nothing goes on a King and Aces do not wrap to Kings.
Golf Solitaire rules
- One standard 52-card deck: seven columns of five face-up cards, 17 cards in the stock.
- Only the exposed (bottom) card of each column can be played.
- A card can go on the waste if it is exactly one rank higher or lower. Suits are ignored.
- No wrapping: an Ace cannot follow a King, and nothing can be played on a King except a Queen.
- Your score is the number of cards left in the columns. Zero is a win.
Tips and strategy
- Before playing, scan for the longest chain you can make, not just the first legal card.
- Save Kings for last when you can; a King on the waste blocks everything except a Queen.
- Clear columns that hide many cards of a rank you will need, like the middle ranks 6 to 8.
- Use Undo to test a line, then come back if it dead-ends.
A short history of Golf Solitaire
Golf is a traditional patience game. It gets its name from scoring like the sport: each deal is a hole, and the fewer cards left on the table, the better your score.
Golf Solitaire questions
Can you play an Ace on a King in Golf Solitaire?
Not in standard Golf. Ranks do not wrap, so a King only accepts a Queen and an Ace only accepts a Two. Some variants allow wrapping, but PuzzlePage uses the classic rule.
How is Golf Solitaire scored?
Like golf: your score is the number of cards left in the columns when the stock runs out, and lower is better. Clearing every card scores zero.
Is every Golf Solitaire deal winnable?
No. A good share of deals cannot be cleared no matter how you play, which is part of the fun. Aim for the lowest score instead.
Is Golf Solitaire free to play?
Yes. Golf Solitaire on PuzzlePage is free in any browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with no download and no sign-up. Your streaks and best times are kept on your device. The page shows a few ads, which never cover the game, and the Player Club removes them.
