- Hawaii became the 50th state on August 21, 1959, the newest state in the nation.
- Hawaii is the only state made up entirely of islands. It has eight main islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
- Mauna Kea rises about 13,800 feet above sea level. Measured from its base on the ocean floor, it is taller than Mount Everest.
- In 1810 King Kamehameha I brought all of the main islands together into one kingdom.
- Iolani Palace in Honolulu, finished in 1882, is the only royal palace on U.S. soil.
- Hawaiian and English are both official languages of Hawaii. Hawaiian was added to the state constitution in 1978.
- Ka Lae, on the island of Hawaii, is the southernmost point of the 50 states.
- Humpback whales travel to Hawaii each winter to give birth and nurse their calves.
