  • Colorado became the 38th state on August 1, 1876, 100 years after the Declaration of Independence, so it is called the Centennial State.
  • The name Colorado comes from a Spanish word meaning colored red.
  • Mount Elbert, at about 14,440 feet, is the highest point in Colorado and the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains.
  • Colorado has 58 named peaks that rise 14,000 feet or higher. Hikers call them fourteeners.
  • Denver is called the Mile High City because its official elevation is one mile, or 5,280 feet, above sea level.
  • The tallest sand dunes in North America are in Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado.
  • At Mesa Verde National Park, Ancestral Pueblo people built Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America.
