- James Oglethorpe founded the colony of Georgia at Savannah in 1733. It was the last of the thirteen colonies.
- Brasstown Bald, in the north Georgia mountains, is the highest point in the state at about 4,784 feet.
- Georgia grows more peanuts than any other state, close to half of the nation's crop.
- The Okefenokee Swamp covers about 438,000 acres and is the largest blackwater swamp in North America.
- Springer Mountain in north Georgia is the southern end of the Appalachian Trail.
- Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta in 1929. His birth home is part of a national historical park.
- A gold rush began near Dahlonega in 1829, and a branch of the U.S. Mint opened there in 1838.
- In 1825 the Cherokee Nation made New Echota, in north Georgia, its capital.
- About 10.7 million people lived in Georgia at the 2020 Census.
