- Delaware became the first state on December 7, 1787, when it was the first to approve the U.S. Constitution.
- Delaware is the second-smallest state by area. Only Rhode Island covers less land and water.
- Delaware has only three counties, New Castle, Kent and Sussex, the fewest of any state.
- Delaware has the lowest average elevation of any state. Its highest point is less than 450 feet above sea level.
- On the night of July 1, 1776, Caesar Rodney rode through a thunderstorm to Philadelphia to vote for independence.
- In 1638, Swedish settlers who sailed on the Kalmar Nyckel built Fort Christina, in what is now Wilmington.
- Dover has been the capital since 1777, when the government moved there from New Castle.
- Each spring, horseshoe crabs crawl onto Delaware Bay beaches to lay eggs, and red knots stop to eat them.
- The Lenape lived mostly in the north of what is now Delaware, and the Nanticoke lived in much of the south.
- About 990,000 people lived in Delaware at the 2020 Census.
