- St. Augustine, founded by Spain in 1565, is the oldest continuously lived-in European city in the continental U.S.
- Apollo 11, the first mission to land people on the Moon, launched from Kennedy Space Center on July 16, 1969.
- Everglades National Park protects 1.5 million acres. In 1947 it became the first national park created to protect its variety of life.
