Quick answer: Most KDP puzzle books hold 80 to 120 puzzles, and 100 is the most common target. The median book built in PuzzlePage's KDP Book Studio has exactly 100 puzzles. On a 6x9 book, keeping the interior at 110 pages or fewer holds US printing at a flat $2.30, which leaves the most room for royalty at a $9.99 list price.

You have a theme, a cover idea and a blank outline, and one question keeps stalling you: how many puzzles in a puzzle book is enough? Too few and reviewers call it thin; too many and the printing cost quietly eats your royalty.

The answer is mostly arithmetic. Once you know how KDP charges for pages and pays royalties, the right puzzle count for your book falls out of a short calculation, and this post walks through it with real numbers.

The word search at the top of this page is built from publishing vocabulary. Play it, print it, then scroll down to see how the same puzzle would sit inside a full book.

📌 Key Takeaways

  • The median book built in the KDP Book Studio (40 builds since July 2026) has 100 puzzles.
  • On a standard 6x9 trim, KDP charges a flat $2.30 to print a black-ink US paperback of 24 to 110 pages; above that it is $1.00 plus $0.012 per page. An 8.5x11 book is a large trim and costs more.
  • Royalty is 60% of list price at $9.99 and above, and 50% at $9.98 and below, minus printing.
  • Answer keys and front matter add pages, so a 100-puzzle book usually lands around 130 pages, not 100.

How Many Puzzles Are in a Typical Puzzle Book?

A typical adult puzzle book on KDP has 80 to 120 puzzles, with 100 the most common round number. Kids' activity books often run shorter, around 50 to 80, and specialty formats like cryptogram quote books can run 45 to 60 because each puzzle fills more of the page.

Our own data points the same way. The median book built in PuzzlePage's KDP Book Studio has 100 puzzles, across 40 builds since July 2026, and the two most-applied templates are a large-print word search for seniors and a Christmas word search.

Book Studio templates: most start at 100 puzzles →

The templates in the screenshot reflect that range. The large-print senior word search and the Sudoku: Easy to Expert book start at 100 puzzles, the Christmas word search at 120, the kids' activity book at 80 and the cryptogram quote collection at 45.

How Does Puzzle Count Turn Into Page Count?

Page count equals front matter plus puzzle pages plus answer-key pages, rounded up to an even number. With one puzzle per page and four answer keys per page, 100 puzzles becomes 4 + 100 + 25 = 129 pages, which prints as 130.

  1. Count front matter: title page, copyright page, how-to-play page, and any introduction. Four pages is typical.
  2. Add puzzle pages: one per puzzle for large print, or half that if you print two puzzles per page.
  3. Add answer-key pages: keys usually print several to a page, so divide the puzzle count by keys per page.
  4. Round up to an even number, because paperback interiors print on both sides of the sheet.

The keys-per-page figure depends on the puzzle type and trim size, so treat four as a planning number. Large-print books often fit fewer keys per page, which is why a 120-puzzle large-print Christmas word search built at 8.5 by 11 inches came out at 173 pages in our tests.

Pro Tip

Build the book before you finalize the price. The Book Studio's KDP Check reads the true page count from the finished interior, so you are pricing the book you will actually upload rather than an estimate.

What Does KDP Charge to Print a Puzzle Book?

For standard-trim US black-ink paperbacks such as 6x9, KDP's paperback printing cost table charges a flat $2.30 for 24 to 110 pages, with no per-page cost. From 111 pages up it becomes $1.00 plus $0.012 per page, so a 130-page book costs $2.56 to print.

That flat band is the most useful number in puzzle book planning. A 60-page book and a 110-page book cost exactly the same to print, so pages 25 through 110 are effectively free content.

Large trims cost more. An 8.5x11 book, the usual size for large print, prints for a flat $2.84 up to 110 pages, then $1.00 plus $0.017 per page, which is why the 173-page large-print row below costs $3.94.

Puzzles (1 per page, 6x9 unless noted)Interior pagesPrint costRoyalty at $8.99Royalty at $9.99Royalty at $12.99
80104$2.30$2.20$3.69$5.49
100130$2.56$1.94$3.43$5.23
120 (large print, 8.5x11)173$3.94$0.55$2.05$3.85

Every royalty above uses KDP's formula: royalty rate times list price, minus printing. The rate is 60% at $9.99 and above and 50% at $9.98 and below, which is why the $8.99 column drops so sharply.

⚠️

Heads up

These are estimates for the US marketplace with standard distribution. Check the exact figure in KDP's own calculator before you publish, and remember that royalty math tells you what one sale earns, not how many sales a book will get.

So How Many Puzzles Should Your Book Have?

Aim for the most puzzles that fit your price and format without feeling padded. For most adult books that is 100 puzzles at a $9.99 list price or higher; on a 6x9 book with a tight budget, 80 puzzles keeps the interior inside the 110-page flat printing band.

  • Large-print books for seniors

100 puzzles, one per page, at 8.5 by 11 inches. Budget for the large-trim printing cost; this audience values roomy grids over volume.

  • Standard adult word search or sudoku

100 to 120 puzzles. Two per page at 6 by 9 inches can keep a big puzzle count inside a reasonable page count.

  • Kids' activity books

50 to 80 puzzles with a mix of types. Children finish faster and like variety more than volume.

  • Cryptogram or quote books

45 to 60 puzzles. Each quote needs space for working, so fewer puzzles still fill the book.

Whatever count you choose, make sure the content is genuinely varied. Readers notice when the same word repeats puzzle after puzzle, and a bigger number does not rescue a repetitive book.

💡

Pro Tip

Put the puzzle count in your subtitle only if it is a selling point. "100 Large-Print Puzzles" reads as value; "47 Puzzles" invites a comparison you do not need.

How Do You Build a 100-Puzzle Book in Book Studio?

Pick a template, set the section counts to total 100, and let the studio lay out the pages and answer keys. The live preview shows the real page count as you change sections, so you can test 80, 100 and 120 in a couple of minutes.

Two sections, 120 puzzles, live page count →
  1. Open the KDP Book Studio and choose Templates, or start blank.
  2. Add sections: a puzzle type, a count, a difficulty and a theme or your own word list for each.
  3. Pick the trim size, then watch the page counter update in the preview.
  4. Download the free first 10 pages and cover to check the layout on paper.
  5. Build the full interior (a Publisher plan feature) and upload it to KDP with your cover.

To test individual puzzles first, the free word search maker and sudoku generator print single pages with answer keys. Many publishers proof one puzzle of each type before committing to a hundred.

KDP says review can take up to 72 hours, so leave a buffer before any holiday deadline.
