Hanukkah bingo, made with care

Hanukkah is the eight-night Jewish festival of lights. It begins on the 25th of Kislev and remembers the Maccabees' rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem in the 2nd century BCE; the word Hanukkah means "dedication." The 33 items come from the holiday itself: the nine-branched menorah and its shamash (the helper candle that lights the others), the dreidel and its four letters, latkes and sufganiyot fried in oil, chocolate gelt, and the song Maoz Tzur.

Teaching with it

Each square is a conversation starter. The dreidel's letters nun, gimel, hei and shin stand for "Nes gadol hayah sham," "a great miracle happened there" (in Israel the last letter is pe, for "here"). Foods fried in oil recall the story of one day's oil lasting eight days. Read a picture book about Hanukkah first, then play, and pause on a square or two to explain it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the Hanukkah bingo words accurate?

Every item is a real part of the holiday: its ritual, foods, symbols or history. Transliterations vary (Hanukkah or Chanukah, hei or hey), so edit any word in the generator to match the spelling your family or school uses.

Can a class that doesn't celebrate Hanukkah use it?

Yes. It's a good fit for a unit on winter holidays around the world. Pair it with a short explanation of what the holiday celebrates, and invite families who celebrate to share their own traditions.

Are the Hanukkah bingo cards free to print?

Yes. Make and download Hanukkah bingo cards free to print, right in your browser. Free PDFs carry a small footer credit; Premium removes it.

How many Hanukkah bingo cards can I make?
