Beaker
Holds, mixes and heats liquid. Its printed marks are only about ±5%, so it does not measure
Erlenmeyer flask (conical flask)
Narrow neck lets you swirl without spilling — mixing, transporting, reacting, filtering. Marks ±5%
Graduated cylinder
Measures volume to about ±1%, far better than a beaker. Read the bottom of the meniscus at eye level
Volumetric flask
One etched ring on the neck marks a single calibrated volume — for making up a solution of known concentration
Volumetric pipette
Delivers one fixed volume — Class A tolerance is absolute, so ±0.05 mL at 50 mL but proportionally worse when small
Burette (US: buret)
Graduated tube with a stopcock; delivers a variable volume by difference, read to two decimals
Pipette bulb (pipette filler)
Draws liquid up into a pipette. It exists so that nobody ever pipettes by mouth
Test tube
Holds and mixes a small sample. Non-volumetric: it measures nothing
Test tube holder (test tube clamp)
Grips a hot test tube so it is never held in the fingers
Watch glass
Shallow glass disc — covers a beaker, holds a small solid, or evaporates a few drops
Evaporating dish
Wide shallow porcelain dish; boils the solvent off a solution to leave the dissolved solid behind
Crucible and lid
Porcelain cup for strong heating — ignition or ashing to constant mass. Porcelain takes about 1000 °C
Crucible tongs
Lifts a hot crucible or dish. Curved tips grip it; bare hands and cloth do not
Clay triangle (pipeclay triangle)
Sits in the iron ring and cradles a crucible or dish, leaving its base open to the flame
Wire gauze
Sits in the iron ring and spreads the flame under a beaker or flask; also a rest for hot ware
Bunsen burner
Gas burner. The air hole sets the gas–air mix; the flame is hottest just above the inner blue cone
Ring stand and iron ring
The support frame. The ring carries gauze, a clay triangle or a funnel above the burner
Utility clamp
Clamps a flask or tube by the neck to the ring stand so it cannot tip over
Burette clamp
Holds one or two burettes upright on a ring stand for a titration
Glass stirring rod
Stirs a solution, and guides the liquid down the outside when decanting or pouring
Rubber policeman
Rubber blade on a stirring rod; scrapes wet solid off glass without scratching it
Spatula
Scoops and transfers a dry solid a little at a time — the tool for weighing out a chemical
Wash bottle
Squeeze bottle of pure water; rinses glassware and washes the last of a solid into the vessel
Filter funnel and filter paper
Gravity filtration: fold the paper to a cone, wet it, rest the stem on the beaker wall
Beaker tongs
Lifts a hot beaker off a hot plate or gauze without touching the glass
Hot plate with magnetic stirrer
Heats without a flame and, with a stir bar dropped in, stirs the liquid at the same time
Thermometer
Reads temperature — an analogue scale is read to one estimated digit past the marks
Safety goggles
Splash goggles, worn the whole time you are in the lab — not only while you are working
