- Beaufort Force 1
- Light air — 1–3 kt (1–3 mph); ripples without foam crests; smoke drifts, wind vanes do not move
- Beaufort Force 2
- Light breeze — 4–6 kt (4–7 mph); small wavelets with glassy, unbroken crests; leaves rustle
- Beaufort Force 3
- Gentle breeze — 7–10 kt (8–12 mph); large wavelets, crests begin to break; a light flag is extended

- Moderate breeze — 11–16 kt (13–18 mph); fairly frequent white horses; raises dust and loose paper
- Beaufort Force 5
- Fresh breeze — 17–21 kt (19–24 mph); moderate waves, many white horses; small trees in leaf sway
- Beaufort Force 6
- Strong breeze — 22–27 kt (25–31 mph); large waves, foam crests everywhere; umbrellas hard to use
- Beaufort Force 7
- Near gale — 28–33 kt (32–38 mph); foam blown in streaks; whole trees in motion

The Beaufort Wind Scale flashcards — questions people ask
- How many cards are in the The Beaufort Wind Scale flashcard deck?
- The The Beaufort Wind Scale deck on PuzzlePage has 13 cards, and all 13 are free to play and free to download with no account and no payment. 13 cards — Force 0 to Force 12 is the whole scale in ordinary use. Forces 13 to 17 were added after the Second World War for tropical cyclones only, cannot be judged from the appearance of the sea, and are not part of the scale as the WMO publishes it.
- What is on the the beaufort wind scale flashcards?
- Every Beaufort force from 0 to 12 with its WMO name, the equivalent wind speed in knots and mph, and the sea and land conditions that define it. Cards look like this: Beaufort Force 0 → Calm — <1 kt (<1 mph); sea like a mirror; smoke rises vertically; Beaufort Force 1 → Light air — 1–3 kt (1–3 mph); ripples without foam crests; smoke drifts, wind vanes do not move. The deck is written for grades 6–12 and filed under science.
- Can I study the beaufort wind scale flashcards online for free?
- Yes. All 13 cards of the The Beaufort Wind Scale deck play free in any web browser at puzzlepage.app, with no account, no app and no card details. It works on a phone, tablet, Chromebook, laptop or classroom projector. Practice mode flips through the cards with nothing scored; quiz mode makes you answer each card before it flips, times the run and scores it.
- Are the the beaufort wind scale flashcards accurate?
- Every card in the The Beaufort Wind Scale deck cites two independent published sources — two different organisations, not a standards body and a site reprinting it — and a script checks that, rather than taking the writer's word for it. A second specialist then re-verified the deck against sources of their own, without reading the citations first. That is the difference from a user-generated flashcard site, where the cards are whatever a stranger typed and nobody is accountable for them.
- Can I print the the beaufort wind scale flashcards?
- Yes. The The Beaufort Wind Scale cards are available as a printable double-sided PDF to cut up, as well as playable in the browser. The whole 13-card printable is free to download, with no account.
- How should I use the The Beaufort Wind Scale deck to revise?
- Start in practice mode and go through the The Beaufort Wind Scale deck once without scoring, to find out which cards you already know — the deck is dealt in a different order every time you open it, so you are recalling the card rather than its position. Then switch to quiz mode, which times and scores the run and lets you re-run only the cards you missed. Use the "flip deck" control to swap which side is the question: recognising an answer is much easier than producing one, so a deck you find easy one way round is usually the harder and more useful drill the other way. Two or three short sessions across a week beat one long one, which is the whole reason flashcards work.
- What grade level are the the beaufort wind scale flashcards for?
- The The Beaufort Wind Scale deck is written for grades 6–12. Because the cards are plain term-and-answer pairs, they are also used outside that band — by adults revising science, and by teachers running them as a whole-class starter on a projector.
