A library scavenger hunt on a bingo card
Library bingo turns an orientation into a game. Students walk the shelves and cross off what they find: each of the ten Dewey Decimal classes, favorite subject shelves like dinosaurs (567.9) and folktales (398.2), and the parts of the library they'll use all year, like the new books shelf, the book return and the catalog.

000s general works, 100s philosophy & psychology, 200s religion, 300s social sciences, 400s language, 500s science, 600s technology, 700s arts & recreation, 800s literature, 900s history & geography. Subject numbers can vary a little between libraries (some shelve biographies under 92 or B, for example), so walk your own shelves first and edit any square that doesn't match.
Running the hunt
Give each student or pair a card and a pencil, set a timer for 15 to 20 minutes, and ask them to jot a title or call number on the back for each square they cross off. It works for a class visit, a new-student orientation or a self-guided passive program by the front desk.

What grades is library bingo for?
Grades 2 to 8 can do it on their own; younger students do well in pairs with a grown-up. Switch to a 3×3 or 4×4 card for a shorter hunt.
Does it work in a library that doesn't use Dewey?
Yes. Delete the ten Dewey classes and the seven subject numbers and keep the rest (a picture book, a magazine, the book return, ask a librarian). That leaves 19 items, enough for a 4×4 card, or add your own sections.
