The three standard rulings
Wide rule is 11/32 inch (8.7mm) between lines and is the standard for elementary school, where larger handwriting needs the room. College rule is 9/32 inch (7.1mm), the default for middle school upward and for most adult note-taking. Narrow rule is 1/4 inch (6.35mm) and fits the most writing per page — common in professional notebooks and in the UK, where 6mm and 8mm are the usual equivalents.
The margin line
The vertical rule sits 1.25 inches from the left edge on US notebook paper. It exists to keep writing clear of the binding and hole punches, and to give teachers somewhere to mark. It's printed in a lighter red by convention so it reads as structure rather than as a line to write on. Turn it off for a clean sheet, or change the color if red isn't what you want.
Which ruling to choose
If you're printing for a child, wide rule almost always. For general note-taking, college. For anything where you want maximum content per page — meeting notes, journals, drafting — narrow. If you're unsure, print one page of each and write a sentence on all three; the right one is obvious immediately and depends more on your handwriting size than on your age.

What ruling is UK exercise book paper?
UK exercise books usually use 8mm or 6mm ruling. Wide rule (8.7mm) is closest to 8mm and narrow rule (6.35mm) is closest to 6mm — near enough for practical purposes.
Printing Tips
- Print at 100% scale.Turn off “fit to page” and “shrink oversized pages” — otherwise your printer rescales the sheet and the measurements no longer match.
- Match the paper size. Choose the same size here as the paper in your tray. Printing a Letter PDF on A4 (or the reverse) scales it.
- Lighter lines print better. A light grey or blue guides your work without competing with it — and it uses far less ink.
- Use heavier paper for wet media. 100gsm and up for fountain pens and markers; standard copier paper is fine for pencil.
