Constellations Word Search

Find 15 constellations and stars of the fall and winter sky

Fifteen star words for the fall and winter night sky, from Pegasus, Andromeda and Cassiopeia to Orion, Taurus and Sirius. The International Astronomical Union recognizes 88 official constellations, and the ones you can see change through the year because Earth orbits the Sun, so our view of space at night slowly shifts. On fall evenings, look for the Great Square of Pegasus and the W of Cassiopeia; on winter evenings, find the three stars of Orion's belt and Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. It fits NGSS 5-ESS1-2; print it for grades 3 to 8.

What is a Word Search?

A word search hides a list of words in a grid of letters. Words can run horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Your job is to find and circle each one.

How to solve it

Scan rows and columns for the first letter of each word, then trace in all eight directions. Check off words as you find them.

Who is this for?

Word searches are perfect for all ages, from young students building vocabulary to adults who enjoy a relaxing mental exercise. Teachers use them for vocabulary preview activities, early finishers, and classroom brain breaks.

Frequently asked questions

How many constellations are there?›
There are 88 official constellations, recognized by the International Astronomical Union, and their official boundaries were set in 1928. Smaller star patterns inside them, such as the Big Dipper in Ursa Major or the Great Square of Pegasus, are called asterisms. The constellations you can see depend on where you live and the time of year.
What is in this constellations word search?›
Eight constellations of the fall and winter sky (Orion, Taurus, Gemini, Pegasus, Andromeda, Cassiopeia, Perseus and Canis Major), three bright stars (Polaris, Sirius and Betelgeuse), the Big Dipper, the Pleiades star cluster in Taurus, and the words constellation and asterism. It is the medium level, for grades 3 to 8, with the answer key on its own page.
Is there a bigger constellations puzzle pack?›
Yes. The $2.99 Constellations Puzzle Pack adds a crossword, a cryptogram, a word scramble, a word fill-in and a bigger word search, with thirty new words from Ursa Minor and Cygnus to light-year and planetarium.
Can words go diagonally or backward?›
It depends on the level. Easy word searches hide words across and down, medium ones add diagonals, and hard ones can also run backward and upward. The difficulty is shown at the top of this page.
Is there an answer key?›
Yes. Every free PuzzlePage word search PDF includes a separate answer-key page that highlights or lists every hidden word.
What grade level is this for?›
Easy word searches suit kindergarten through grade 2, medium ones grades 3 to 8, and hard ones older students and adults. Teachers use them for vocabulary previews, early finishers and sub days. The page above names the grades this one was written for.
Can I customize this puzzle?›
Yes. Open it in the free Word Search editor with the words already filled in, then change the title, edit or add words and pick a difficulty. Downloads are free with your email, and Premium removes the PuzzlePage credit.
