Sudoku is a logic-based number placement puzzle. Fill a 9×9 grid so every row, column, and 3×3 box contains the digits 1 through 9 with no repeats.
How to solve it
Begin by finding rows, columns, or boxes with the most given digits. Use elimination to narrow down which digit belongs in each empty cell. Never guess: every puzzle has exactly one logical solution.

Step-by-step: solving the Sudoku — Volume 7

- Find rows or boxes with the most digits. Scan for any row, column, or 3×3 box that already has six or seven digits. Those are easiest to complete.
- Use elimination, not guessing. For each empty cell, eliminate digits that already appear in its row, column, or 3×3 box. Every puzzle has exactly one logical solution.
- Mark candidate digits in margins. When a cell has two or three possibilities, pencil them lightly in the corner. Updates as you fill more cells.
- Verify with the answer key. Once complete, compare every row, column, and box against the solution page.
