How the Emoji Game Works
Apple's Emoji Game, part of the puzzle set in Apple News+, shows you a short sequence of emoji that encodes a phrase — a film, a song, an idiom, a common saying. It is a rebus in modern dress: the same puzzle form where a picture of an eye plus a heart plus a sheep reads “I love ewe”. The difficulty comes from the fact that emoji are ambiguous by design. A single 🔥 can mean fire, hot, burn, lit, or flame depending on what sits beside it.
Five Strategies That Actually Help
- Say them out loud. Emoji rebuses run on sound, not meaning. 🐝 + 🍃 is “belief”, not botany.
- Count words against emoji. If the answer has four words and you have three emoji, at least one emoji is carrying two words — or one word is implied by the order.
- Start with the least ambiguous emoji. Objects with one obvious name (🎸 guitar, 🌙 moon) anchor the phrase; faces and gestures are the loosest and should be resolved last.
- Watch for homophone traps. 👁 is “I”, 🌊 is often “sea” or “see”, 🐛 can be “bug” as in annoy. The puzzle rewards puns over precision.
- Use the category. Knowing you are looking for a film title collapses the search space enormously — try to establish the category from the strongest emoji first.
